Beck Outs “Progressive” Gingrich

I confess, I was about ready to hop on the Gingrich bandwagon. he’s for smaller government, empowering individuals instead of government for health, social security and medicare, wants to abolish Obamacare, is for developing our own God-given energy resources, to mention a few of the reasons why I like Newt.

Newt’s 21st Century Contract For America is a fine start, and presents an outline in much greater specificity than any other candidate, including Obama. So what’s not to like?

It turns out, that like Romney, Gingrich is a self-proclaimed progressive, and thinks that FDR was the greatest President in US history.

  1. Oh, no! “Progressive!” That has the word “progress” in it, and we all know that things need to stay the same if we want them to ever get better. Gingrich has no chance in the general election anyway — he was a lobbyist for Freddie Mac, he’s had more wives than a stereotypical Mormon, and no one under 40 knows who he is.

  2. Some good points Joe. I believe that Gingrich is the only candidate who can think faster on his feet than Obama, and won’t throw his punches. He also has a clearly defined roadmap of policies in place.

I do have a very big issue with his admiration of the progressive movement, including his professed admiration of FDR, Teddy, and Wilson.

The term “progressive” simply puts a happy face on the theory that government exists to solve it’s citizen’s problems, a trait also shared by communism, socialism or fascism.

If you listen closely to the embedded ‘Tube above, you will hear Gingrich saying that he still believes in the “Four Freedoms”. This is a reference to a short speech to Congress by FDR:

“The first is freedom of speech and expression — everywhere in the world.

The second is freedom of every person to worship God in his own way — everywhere in the world.

The third is freedom from want — which, translated into world terms, means economic understandings which will secure to every nation a healthy peacetime life for its inhabitants — everywhere in the world.

The fourth is freedom from fear — which, translated into world terms, means a world-wide reduction of armaments to such a point and in such a thorough fashion that no nation will be in a position to commit an act of physical aggression against any neighbor– anywhere in the world.”

The first two points are constitutionally guaranteed, while the second two are impossible to achieve, even with big government intervention.

For extra credit you might check out a paper on the American Progressive movement. And do your own research.

“While the Progressives differed in their assessment of the problems and how to resolve them, they generally shared in common the view that government at every level must be actively involved in these reforms. The existing constitutional system was outdated and must be made into a dynamic, evolving instrument of social change, aided by scientific knowledge and the development of administrative bureaucracy.”

  3. Newts biggest problem is that he actually did something in all his years in congress. We have a president with no track record at all. I think his biggest asset is that he knows how to get things done. To form coalitions and how to bust up trouble makers. Our biggest problem is that we, as the public, aren’t willing to compromise. To be effective you have to compromise because you will never be able to get 100% consensus on anything. With out a veto proof majority in both houses compromise is the only solution./
