Facts About Poverty That Will Blow Your Mind

There is a common denominator here, see #17 for a clue.

I guess the War on Poverty isn’t going so well, is it?

100 Million Living in poverty in the US

The following are 40 facts about poverty in America that will blow your mind….

#1 In the United States today, somewhere around 100 million Americans are considered to be either “poor” or “near poor”.

#2 It is being projected that when the final numbers come out later this year that the U.S. poverty rate will be the highest that it has been in almost 50 years.

#3 Approximately 57 percent of all children in the United States are living in homes that are either considered to be either “low income” or impoverished.

#4 Today, one out of every four workers in the United States brings home wages that are at or below the poverty level.

#5 According to the Wall Street Journal, 49.1 percent of all Americans live in a home where at least one person receives financial benefits from the government. Back in 1983, that number was below 30 percent.

#6 It is projected that about half of all American adults will spend at least some time living below the poverty line before they turn 65.

#7 Today, there are approximately 20.2 million Americans that spend more than half of their incomes on housing. That represents a 46 percent increase from 2001.

#8 During 2010, 2.6 million more Americans fell into poverty. That was the largest increase that we have seen since the U.S. government began keeping statistics on this back in 1959.

#9 According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the percentage of “very poor” rose in 300 out of the 360 largest metropolitan areas during 2010.

#10 Since Barack Obama became president, the number of Americans living in poverty has risen by 6 million and the number of Americans on food stamps has risen by 14 million.

#11 Right now, one out of every seven Americans is on food stamps and one out of every four American children is on food stamps.

#12 It is projected that half of all American children will be on food stamps at least once before they turn 18 years of age.

Techie Update: Open DNS

You may have heard last week that for some users, a DNS virus was affecting some Windows users internet access after the FBI pulled a plug for a fix for the last five years or so. What did the FBI do? They set up a new DNS server for those affected.

This is off of the top of my head, so bear with me. DNS is geeky shorthand for Domain Name Server. When a website registers a Domain Name with ICAAN, a redirect is made to point to a bunch of numbers, the IP Address. So Disney.com might actually be 692.503.XXX.XXX. The Domain Name Server resolves the registered Domain Name to the proper IP address.

What the “virus” did was to point the DNS server to somewhere else which would make the internet inoperable for those Windows machines infected. I’m guessing that most of those machines are not still online anyway. I think I read that maybe 50-60k machines were infected in the US, a pretty small number.

The primary point that I’m trying to convey is that no matter what platform that you enjoy, be it Windows, Mac, or Linux, there is a free solution available, it is called OpenDNS.

What does OpenDNS do, and why should I use it?

First and foremost, for me at least, OpenDNS servers are faster than your internet provider offers. You can also block any site, or group of sites if you choose, and even configure it in your router.

If you are running a Mac, all you need to do is go to System Preferences> Network>Advanced: and enter the OpenDNS IP address under DNS:

You can also configure your router, to learn more, go here:

You’ll be glad you did.

Mark Levin Explains Why I’m Backing Mitt

Mark Levin

schools a caller who says that Mitt is too moderate to support, after he locked in the nomination. Maybe he’ll vote Libertarian or other third party.

This is one of the best rants that I’ve heard lately, although Levin comes up with them once or twice daily. He echoes my beliefs, and says it better than I can. We need to really get behind Mitt, since our country will not be recognizable if Obama wins a second term, we will all be slaves to Obama’s fundamentally transformed former greatest nation in the history of the world. Why transform greatness?

I was surprised that he also supported the same candidates that I liked over Bush, McCain, and Romney.

Here’s the listen:
