On Gun Control and Sandy Hook

“Never let a crisis go to waste”

~ Rahm Emanuel ~

“A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”

Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution

Question One in Our National Conversation: Why Did Gun Control Fail the Families of Newtown?

Connecticut has strong gun laws that help combat the illegal gun market, prevent the sale of most guns without background checks and reduce risks to children, according to the Brady Campaign. In the organization’s 2009 state scorecards released for all 50 states, Connecticut … has the nation’s fourth strongest gun laws.

“Connecticut has done more than most states to combat illegal guns and has worked to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people. In fact, Connecticut has a one-of-a-kind law that allows a judge to remove guns from people who have been determined to be a threat to themselves or others,” said Ron Pinciaro, President of CT Against Gun Violence

Feinstein rumored to be pushing semi-auto ban if Obama reelected

After the Sandy Hook massacre, liberals everywhere seem to be jumping back on the Assault Weapons Ban bandwagon again. This is an extreme reaction, and infringes upon all of our Constitutional rights. We aren’t even absolutely sure if a Bushmaster .223 AR15 was even used, initial reports stated that it was found in the trunk of the shooter’s mother’s car.

By Friday afternoon, Democrats were calling to reinstate the AWB, and most would think that Feinstein is getting ready to introduce legislation because of this tragic incident. They would be wrong, Feinstein was already preparing to reintroduce the AWB, the above piece was published Nov 6, 2012 (election day)

Media myths on ‘assault weapons’ and ‘semiautomatic firearms’

This link addresses some facts about what is, and what is not an assault weapon. Simply put, an assault weapon is military grade capable of multiple bursts at minimum, and fully automatic machine-gun fire for most. A civilian AR15 is not capable of being used in this manner, even if someone tried to modify one, it may not work as expected.

There is already an assault weapons ban in place, and it’s been there since 1934 after Al Capone’s hey-days and the rampant use of Thompson (Tommy machine guns) full automatics by criminal gangs.

This Tiny TX Town Allows Teachers to Carry Concealed Guns: ‘We Can Protect Our Children’

“… children and their parents don’t give much thought to safety at the community’s lone school — mostly because some of the teachers are carrying concealed weapons. In the remote area, the nearest sheriff’s office is 30 minutes away, and people tend to know — and trust — one another. So the school board voted to let teachers bring guns to school.

“We don’t have money for a security guard, but this is a better solution,” Superintendent David Thweatt said. “A shooter could take out a guard or officer with a visible, holstered weapon, but our teachers have master’s degrees, are older and have had extensive training. And their guns are hidden. We can protect our children.”

Very well written piece from FaceBook:

After the massacre in Aurora and the tragic loss of life in Connecticut that took the lives of 6 and 7 year olds plus the administrators… what could be done and should be done about “guns” is the topic of discussion.

In talking with this to people of foreign lands like Australia or Great Britain… it is obvious they do NOT understand the mindset of the typical American gun owner.

Contrary to popular belief, the average American gun owner does not see himself as some sort of John Wayne, Colt 45 strapped to hip, walking down some dusty street in Dodge City looking to take on the “fastest gun in the West”.

The desire to own a gun is born in the heart of the American soul because of how it was that our Nation came to be.

We are not a millennia old monarchy that relied on the Kings and Queens to protect us…and dictate to us how it is we should live our lives. It is part of our DNA not to SURRENDER to the authorities, just BECAUSE they are the authorities.

We challenge the governing authorities – If we believe they are in the wrong.

We FOUGHT for our Freedom from the tyranny of Kings and Lords… and we did it with GUNS! When King George blocked the shipment of guns to the colonies, it only infuriated us more. An unarmed public is not free, they are slaves and we KNEW it.

So, we declared our Independence…and fought not one – but TWO wars against Great Britain to establish it.

And in the course of a short time…we became THE GREATEST country in the world, and helped the world overcome the tyranny of dictators in two world wars.

The desire to own a gun or guns in the mindset of the American Patriot is based on one simple premise…it isn’t about hunting – or recreational shooting – it is about protection.. not only from the criminals that take advantage of the weak, but also from the tyranny of an out of control Government.

THIS was the reason the Founding Fathers that established this great country…. and assembled the Declaration of Independence – The Bill of Rights – and The United States Constitution – allow gun ownership by the common man in those documents.

Because they were all too aware of the power a corrupt government can bring to bear on citizens that are incapable of defending themselves from that very government.

Unfortunately – this mindset has been erased from many Americans today that grew up being taught that “guns are bad”.

Guns are NOT bad…anymore than pencils cause spelling errors or that cars kill people. Guns are inanimate objects. How they are used depends on the person that is using them.

A hunter uses a shotgun to kill game to feed his family

The soldier uses his weapon to protect his brother in arms

The cop uses it to subdue the felon

The average citizen uses it to protect his family from those that would harm them

In comparison…

Tobacco related deaths kill more people every year than guns do

Hospitals kill more people every year than guns do

Drunk drivers kill more people every year than guns do

Home accidents (falls, etc) kill more people every year than guns do

And in contrast….

Guns do something that tobacco, hospitals, drunk drivers and homes do NOT do…

They are used to PROTECT the innocent and the weak from the harm that would be inflicted upon them by CRIMINALS!

IF only ONE teacher or school official in Connecticut had been armed – and was trained to use it – how could that have changed what happened? How MANY lives and families could have been spared the anguish caused by ONE MAN with a gun?

For instance – in 1997 a student in Pearl, Mississippi was STOPPED from continuing his killing spree by the Principal after he retrieved his pistol from his vehicle. But what IF that Principal had his weapon WITH HIM…and did not have to go get it, could he have saved the life of at least one of those that were killed by a disturbed teenager?

No amount of gun legislation could have stopped Adam Lanza from perpetrating his crime. He STOLE the guns he used, from someone that bought them legally.

The simple fact is this, which those that hate guns despise – guns are designed to KILL. Whether it is the food you eat, or to protect yourself and/or others. This is WHY soldiers, police and citizens own and use them.

Banning guns in the U.S. is NOT an option, and anybody that believes they can be is deluding themselves.

Banning so-called “assault weapons” is nothing more than hyperbole. There is no such thing as an assault gun … it is a concocted label designed to scare ,,, for impacts sake.

An AR-15 is no more an “assault gun” than a Honda is a weapon of mass destruction. BUT “assault weapon” sounds so ominous!

NOW the Liberal left, like Sen. Diane Feinstein of CA and Mayor Bloomberg of NY are calling for the ban of assault weapons and high capacity magazines. This is nothing more than feel good hypocrisy that makes the advocates of these measures APPEAR to be doing something about “the gun problem”.

The fallacy of the argument is that the most common weapon used in a crime is not the evil “assault rifle with high capacity magazines”, it is the .38 revolver. Which IS NOT a semi-automatic weapon for those not familiar with them.

The ban on “assault rifles” was tried under the Clinton Administration…and had NO IMPACT whatsoever on gun violence. The fact is – gun violence has been going down SINCE the ban was lifted in 2004.

Another fact: In Switzerland – where 1 out of 2 people own guns, has the lowest crime rate in the world.

In Israel – where the teachers are armed with automatic Tavors, school massacres are NON existent. This is a land where Muslims regularly bomb transit buses and shoot rockets at the populace. Why don’t they attack schools? For the same reason that wackos here in the U.S. don’t target NRA meetings or gun shows – the people are armed!

Another fact: the WORST attack on a school in the United States happened in 1927 in Bath, Michigan. 45 People were killed, including 38 children and the school superintendent. The weapon used was dynamite. Good ol’ TNT. Was there an outcry that SOMETHING needed to be done about the access to TNT from the Gov’t and the media of the day? Were restrictions and bans placed on the populace so they could not have access to TNT? The answer to these questions is – no! The citizenry of that day realized this was an insane move – by an insane person. Did they grieve – of course. But there wasn’t the knee-jerk reaction that promulgates the news, social pages and conversations as it does today.

Now to get to it…

After the massacre of 20 innocent children, the cry goes out – ”Something MUST be done. We need gun legislation to stop this from ever happening again!”

My question is WHAT?

Ban assault weapons – didn’t work before. And anyone that knows guns, understands the damage a shotgun can do as opposed to a AR-15. That’s why the Police carry 12 gauge shotguns. And a regular hunting rifle can do far more bodily harm than an AR-15 or an AK-47, from a greater distance away from the target.

Ban large capacity magazines – also didn’t work before. Senator Feinstein wants to return to the 10 round capacity limit. Being fired from a semi-automatic – 10 rounds can still cause harm.

Background checks – already in place. And there is NOT one instance of anyone using a gun bought at a gun show that used the weapon for mass murder.

The problem is our live and let live society. There were red flags about the shooter in Tucson last year, the Aurora shooter earlier this year and now the Newtown killer.

After the fact – after they snapped…THEN it comes out! ”Yeah, they were a little strange…disenfranchised from society” – NOW they are mass murderers!

Do I have the answers – no! But banning guns and magazines WILL NOT solve the problem. Any more that if Great Britain had banned knives during the terror of Jack the Ripper that would have stopped his killing spree?

One of the problems is when state run mental hospitals were closed in the 1980’s and now there is nowhere for those that are deemed or possibly unstable to go. Adam Lanza, the perpetrator of the mass killing in Connecticut was obviously not mentally sound. According to reports, his own mother didn’t trust him, and was at a loss as to what to do.

The point is – in EVERY instance – there were indicators that there was something wrong with these individuals. Reports are that the day BEFORE his killing spree, Adam Lanza had a confrontational exchange at that very school.

Was this reported to the authorities?

Had somebody stepped in – could this tragedy have been averted? If someone had been more aware in Aurora Colorado – could James Holmes have been stopped; or Jared Loughner the year before in Tucson? We will never know.

But the knee jerk reaction to these tragedies – is blame the gun! Which goes against EVERYTHING instilled in the American heart by the Constitution!

The guns or access to them IS NOT the problem. Guns don’t jump off the table, shove themselves into the hands of an innocent bystander, drive them to a school or theater and command the person to pull the trigger. It is the individual that does this! It is not the gun manufacturers fault any more than Ford, GM or Chrysler or Budweiser are responsible when a drunk driver gets behind the wheel and kills a family of 5.

In summery – for those of you that do not understand WHY it is American’s are so attached to our guns and why we fight to hold on to them – because IT IS OUR RIGHT AS AMERICAN CITIZENS!

It is GUARANTEED in the Law that governs our great land – the Constitution of the United States.

And the Second Amendment that our Founding Fathers were so wise to put in that Constitution – is the guarantee that ALL of the other Amendments will be followed and protected, from ALL enemies – foreign AND domestic.

Germany established gun control in 1938 and from 1939 to 1945, a total of 13 million Jews and others who were unable to defend themselves were rounded up and exterminated.

China established gun control in 1935. From 1948 to 1952, 20 million political dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated

Guatemala established gun control in 1964. From 1964 to 1981, 100,000 Mayan Indians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

Uganda established gun control in 1970. From 1971 to 1979, 300,000 Christians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

Cambodia established gun control in 1956. From 1975 to 1977, one million educated people, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

Defenseless people rounded up and exterminated in the 20th Century because of gun control: 56 million.

Guns in the hands of honest citizens save lives and property and yes, gun-control laws adversely affect only the law-abiding citizens.

During WWII the Japanese decided not to invade America because they knew most Americans were ARMED!

With guns, we are ‘citizens’. Without them, we are ‘subjects’.

History shows that governments always manipulate tragedies to attempt to disarm the people~
