  1. Country has taken over as the center point for pop ballads. To me it not country if it has drums. However, that is a much better song than the garbage that is out there that our kids are listening to. There is a purity to it, an innocence and that is good.

I went to Nashville in the early 90’s and went to the Opry. It was boring to me until the old school guys went on stage. All acoustical and no drums. It was great from then on.

  2. The Grand Old Opry originally didn’t stand for drums, they claimed it was race music. Of course, that’s all changed now, bass, drums, and even guitar riffs are pretty much interchangeable with what we used to call rock.

The vocals, story-line and melody define country these days.

As far as pop goes, there is very little worth a mention, what passes as R&B these days (which would fall into the ballad category) seems very contrived to these ears. Hitting four notes on a single syllable when one would do for one example. How many no-talent pop stars have mangled the Star-Spangled Banner out of all recognition?
