Don Kirshner “discovered” Kansas playing at a high school hop in 73 or 74. This is the strongest tune from their initial release, Kansas: “Can I Tell You”
There is only one verse, repeated three times. Nice fiddle playing, too! John Brown at Parker’s Ferry is portrayed on the album art.
The lyrics:
Can I tell you something
Got to tell you one thing
If you expect the freedom
That you say is yours
Prove that you deserve it
Help us to preserve it
Or being free will just be
Words and nothing more
PS, this is the theme song of Rich TAkes!
That’s a painting ofJohn Brown on the cover. Perfect theme song as well.
John Brown was a revolutionary abolitionist. He attempted to lead a slave rebellion in 1859 which led to an attempted take over of a federal armory at Harpers Ferry, Virginia. The fort was surrounded by a company of U.S. Marines under the command of Colonel Robert E. Lee of the United States Army. He was arrested, tried and hung by the State of Virginia.
Yep he did, and both Brown and Lee were great patriots, each in their own way, weren’t they?
They were both patriotic, yet both eventually committed treason as they both took up arms against the United States.
I’m not sure that is true in Lee’s case. He resigned his commission and with it his citizenship before becoming the lead general in the Confederate Army.
